Fablehaven: Keys to the Demon Prison
In the first four books of this series the author is building up to this crazy showdown between good and evil. What more would you expect from a middle school fantasy series? I've explained how the first books were about the magical animal preserve that the two main characters, Seth and Kendra, discover that their grandparents run. This preserve is more secret than most of the other magical creature preserves because it also houses one of the keys to the demon Prison Zzyzx (try to pronounce that it is a mouth full). A prison is full of all the worst demons imaginable. In this final book this key has been taken by the enemy as well as the other four hidden keys, which are also magical tools needed to open the prison. One lets you travel through time, one lets you travel through space, one grants immortality, one grants magical healing and the last one allows you to see anything anywhere. Zzyzx also has a number of safe guards that I will not reveal on this blog, you will have to read the books to find out what else happens.
Looking back on the series I thought it was great. The first couple books were a little but slow but thats part of the formula for building a great series. The writer needed time to slowly introduce his original concept and build from there. Brandon Mull seems to excel at that. He also does a great job of growing his characters throughout the series having them find out more about themselves and the magical world as they progress. Solid series by a solid writer!

You blazed a trail with the Hunger Games, being the first of six of us to post each of those books. Tell me, do you think this series has the popularity to be picked up and made into a bunch of movies? Will yours be the last Fablehaven posts?
ReplyDeleteTo both questions I must reply I don't know.
