The English Patient

Happy 20th anniversary to the 1996 Oscars! Here's me, talking about that year's Best Picture:
Amazing to think this is twenty years old - that's "only," not "already." Felt like a deliberate throwback or love letter to a time when "prestige film" meant wartime romances set in Northern Africa. How does a movie with plane crashes and torture scenes and landmines and burn victims and attractive people gettin' it feel so long and so slow? But the actors are good, Ralph Fiennes is exceptional, and there's just enough meat on this bone to forgive all the fat.
